love poem from heart to belly – plate

I inscribed love poem from heart to belly on a hand-made ceramic plate. Using slip (watered down coloured clay), I added an image from the poem, and I scratched the words into the surface to reveal the colour of the clay underneath. I then used a clear glaze to seal it and give it some shine.

I wanted to create something which places poetry into an everyday situation – in this case, something you might eat your dinner from. The poem is a wee reminder to be kind to your body – all the bits of it, even the bits you have trouble with sometimes – and eating is a good time to do that. You can read more about the process in this blog post.

The poem was published in Gutter (2016).
